If you like crowd,go to Punta Cana.There are more than 40 resorts,just on the beach.
Out the hotels there is not so much to see.
If you like little-good hotels and less turistic but nice beaches,go to Las Galeras or Las Terrenas,in Samana' peninsula.
Out the hotels there is a lot to see(Water falls,hills with tropical forest,islands,the sea,wild beaches) and you will have not to travel kilometers to see all this.Few minutes or less than one hour.It depends.
In the south,to Bahia hibe,there are some resorts.Maybe crowded,in high season as the ones of Punta Cana Bavaro.
The sea is nice there,especially for divers,snorkelers.
There are islands to visit,and other interesting trips to rivers,sugar cane cultivations,etc.The capital is at one hour from there.

I just got home yesterday from a week in Punta Cana (on the East coast). We stayed at the Occidental Grand Flaminco. It wasn't bad. Food was great. Had some room issues, but over all a great time. and right on the ocean. We had other friends (3 couples) who we met on the flight down and they stayed at the Palma Real. All 3 loved it there. That would be the place I would recommend. That's in Punta Cana as well. While we didn't stay there... when we picked them up on the bus to head to the airport, you could see through the main entry area and the ocean was right behind the hotel. Like our hotel, they also have shows every night... and the food is great. hopefully this helps!

We like the Punta Cana area as the beaches are the best there. We only like to stay at 5 star hotels and the few I would suggest are all relatively new -- Majestic Colonial, Grand Bahia Principe (Gold Club), Paradisus, Secrets Excellence.

There are many great resorts in the Dominican Republic. The beaches in Punta cana are the best. I recommend Ocean Blue, I was there for my Honeymoon. It was really good! You can also try Barcelo Bavaro and Casa de Campo. Enjoy!

If you are in Peurta Plata the beach is o.k. watch for the sand fleas though.....If you are in LA ROMANA the beaches suck and The Best white sandy beaches are in Punta Cana.....have fun we tried them all And as for the resorts and the hotels in the premises are clean and excillent....

i have been to dr 2x and stayed at two beach hotel resorts in two different areas of the country both stink

It depends where you go and how much money you're willing to spend, but there are excellent hotels around here.
