This is called "clustering illusion". It is basically a cognitive bias where you see two or more rare events very close to each other (physically or temporally) and so see a pattern that doesn't really exist.
For example, every year one or two dogs knock over guns on hunting trips and shoot their masters. You may never even hear about this most years. If you happen to catch two or three stories about this within a few days of each other however, you think there is an epidemic.
The recent school shootings are another example. Think of all the inner city shootings that didn't make the news. Now that you see 4 or 5 on the news within a few weeks, now all of a sudden it is a new and deadly problem that came out of nowhere but must somehow signal a trend, when in fact that isn't necessarily true.

The thing is, the press is only trying to make the people more angry on this issue. Do you know how many stingray kills/attacks there are every year? Look it up. Only until now, Steve Irwin is the only one that has been well known and famous. This news would have NEVER been in the news if not for that. Stop the stingray killings.

I believe the Terrorists are doing it, at least that is what George Bush and the GOP are going to say and then declare war on Florida to capture the stingrays.

I know, very odd.. it jumped on a boat??? and got him the heart as well???
I wonder if there are other cases of things like this happening before Steve Irwin and we just never heard of it because it wasn't anyone famous.

the rays are not going crazy but the poeple chasing them with boats and swimming too close to them are crazy. there are rays that are big enough to jump out of the water and crush a smalll boat so beware of the rays they can kill you just as fast as a shark can.

I had asked myself the exact same question... To begin with, these incidents are extremely rare...and then the past 2 publicized incidents??? It's crazy.
