Hi
Using a steam-cleaning machine on your carpet will not destroy your carpets. Now after saying this.

Using too much water (drying times of over 24 hours) can damage your carpet.
Using soap with a PH of 10 and up will damage your carpet.
Using a lot of soap can damage your carpet. (Leaves a sticky residue)
Carpet manufactures recommends that you clean your carpet every 18 months minimum.

From a carpet cleaner of 14 years.

I've been using them for years...in fact I owe several different kinds, always searching for a better model with 3 cats, and 2 dogs. And I never had a problem with them ruining my carpets.

The carpet backer adhesive is made of Latex, excessive use of water and steam can damage that adhesive- but normal use of carpet clean will not harm it. Latex is water soluble -

Dirt ruins your carpet.

Steam vacs remove that dirt.
