On September 28, 1953, baseball's owners unanimously agreed upon the move of the St. Louis Browns to Baltimore. That's when they became the 'Orioles'.

They're nicknamed the O's. They used to be the St. Louis Browns (as noted above). Also, the New York Yankees were originally called the Baltimore Orioles.
