I read somewhere that a Core 2 Duo with 2.14 GHZ is the same as a 4.28 ghz single core processor. Is this true? I am putting together a new computer and I want the fastest processor avaliable which would be the best Intel Pentium D 3.2 ghz, Core 2 Duo 2.14 ghz, or should I just get a AMD.

Well I am going to provide some benchmarks under sources for you to look at so you can compare performance. Anyway, the thing about a 2.14Ghz Core 2 Duo being the same as a 4.28Ghz single core is false, you cannot simply multiply by 2 because there are two cores. But, the Core 2 Duo is faster than a Pentium D because of the improved architecture of the Core 2 Duo. If you want the fastest processor available, that would be the Core 2 Extreme at 2.93GHz. It is $1000, so if you are looking for something a little less expensive try the Core 2 Duo at 2.4Ghz, its only $320.

"Intel's Core 2 Duo line marks the end of AMD's run of dominance through the dual-core desktop-processor landscape. Not only are Intel's new chips fast, efficient, and well designed, but they're also aggressively priced and sure to send ripples though the desktop PC industry. If you are buying or building a new computer, we recommend that a Core 2 Duo chip be at its center."

Get the AMD. The core 2 does not really do anything significant without an OS that can fully utilize the power of it. If speed is what you need, get the AMD. A 2.4GHz processor will give you just that- 2.4Ghz whether its a P2, P3, P4 or otherwise.
