Few people master the skill of writing; yet, through writing every "age" is capable of communicating their hopes, desires, thoughts, social mores of their time--a kaleidoscope of the past, present, and possible future.
Writing is a skill that can be taught. Unfortunately, public schools in the United States no longer consider writing a skill they encourage. Teachers do not want to spend the time involved in grading writing assignments, checking spelling, grammar, and assessing subject content. Many immigrants are not proficient in the English language, have minimal, if any, spelling or grammatical capabilities, and have no idea of subject content.
Colleges and universities struggle with students who are inept in writing. Many professors limit testing to true/false or multiple choice answers:excluding any comprehensive written exams.
Where are our Thomas Jeffersons, Mark Twains, George Orwells, F. Scott Fitzgeralds, Kurt Vonneguts, John Steinbecks, Ernest Hemingways, Finlay Kantors? Margaret Mitchell had only one novel published; but, what a blockbuster!

Thinking of other people's emotional well being should be mastered.
We get one life and every one of us should master the skill of compassion. For every compassionate act, the world becomes a better place and that's not a bad thing at all.
