They aren't being overprotective because there are alot of predators out there. However, there is a way for you to have one. They can monitor your account very closely. By setting privacy settings on your myspace noone would be able to view your pictures without your authorization. So even though they could go to the page that lists you ; they wouldn't be able to access your main page. Kids fall prey to predators because the parents don't monitor the usage closely. Give them your password and understand that they will view your page at any given day and the day they are unable to view it due to you changing your password ; you would forfeit your privilidges. They would be able to see everything. I have 4 kids varying in ages and have set the above rules and haven't had any problems. No STRANGERS are permitted access to them. Your parents may not want to be bothered with monitoring and so it is easier just to tell you no.
Either way you have to accept their decision.

They think they are doing what is best for you and you are interpreting it as overprotectiveness which it could well be. Get your own account using someone else's computer and edit it in a library or at school.

However I do not use myspace I think it is a waste of time when I see my friends every day at school anyway.

Probably, yes.

However, it depends on how practical *you* are and how much common sense *you* have I think.

The people that get victimized on the internet generally were foolish enough to give out details about themselves in the first place. Are you?

MySpace has turned into a crapola site now, though, so it's not as if you're missing a whole lot (as far as I see it).

Yes, unless you have been known to get in trouble before.

See, sometimes I really think kids should be banned until 21 (or 30) because they are prime bait for wackos and pervs. This has caused a lot of cool things in the web to dissappear, like MSN chat. Then again, banning kids would make the web "forbidden" and thus irresistible, provoking kids to pose as grown ups and getting in more serious trouble with the aforementioned wackos and pervs.
It's a sad, sad situation.

I think so I mean MOST kids aren't so stupid that they'll go off with the first person they like on there. My parents don't let me have one ... I have one anyways but I do anyways but please don't let that make you get one because you could get into some trouble. I guess your parents are just trying to be good parents but still a bit overprotective.

NO-O-O! I know you do not believe it but you do not have the knowledge and discretion you will have later in life. Even if you are canny enough not to divulge your real name and address, you can inadvertantly give enough clues for a predator to find you. Your parents are only trying to protect you from danger as good parents should.

My daughter has one, but so does my wife.
Mom watches those pages with more dedication than a hawk does!

Chances are, your parents don't have that kind of time.

They're being very practical.
