the dell xps m1210 is still smaller with a 12.1" screen & weighs under 4.4 lbs & much increased portability > but then cost shoots upto approx $1250

Hi! I, too, am a college student and after a lot of research I found a refurbished Dell Inspiron 6000 on ebay for about $650 this January. At the time it was listed at about $850 at dell.com. I think Dell no longer carries this series but there are more modern ones like the E1505 that lists for about $650 now on dell.com. So, I'm sure you can probably find one on ebay.com for a bit cheaper. There are also smaller and less extensive laptops that could be less expensive. If you don't mind buying a used one, maybe try craigslist and your college bulletins/classifieds. It's not hard to get an extremely decent ,if not wonderful laptop, but depending on your price range, it may just takes a bit more research. You'll find it!
Hope that helps! :-)

Inspiron 1405 or 1505.
1405 is 14 inches and is easy for carrying.
Look for the specifications and consult friends and families before making your final decision.
Good Luck with your new laptop!
Enjoy.
