We want to have our honeymoon in Greece, but we are not sure where to stay (mainland or islands)? We also don't know what a good resort/hotel would be to stay at?

Bravo Karpenissi well said!

Crete is really very pretty. However, the most famous honeymoon island is Santorini. July is high season but Oia village there is a good idea even then. It is expensive though, & you should try looking for accomodation there soon.

Mykonos is nice, with ver nice beaches but not that ideal for honeymooners.

So, I would recommend the following:

What you coud do is fly from Athens to Chania (Crete) -2 airlines fly there Aegean and Olympic -
Stay there for a couple of nights, visit the Samarian Gorge (if you are into hiking), then bus or car drive to Heraklion (2 and half hrs), there you may visit the Minoan site and next morning take the hydrofoil to Santorini the connections are daily in July, it takes two hrs & the cost is about 31E.

Staying there you will relax watching the Aegean (you will need it after trekking Crete!!!), hotels are very romantic & ideal for honeymooners.
Then if you feel like partying & sinceyou are gonna be in the neiborhood, go to Mykonos for a couple of nights (daily hydrofoil connection again, fare is about 29,00 E) . Partying & just having fun on the beach there is grand.

It all depends on how much time/money you have and what you like doing.

Plan carefully, state your preferances clearly when you request rooms.

Enjoy your honeymoon!!!!!

I'm going to disagree with everybody who has answered you so far, because I think everyone who has answered has given you places that may be romantic, but are also very busy - so it is difficult to have that special moment when you have 100 Germans circling round you for the same photo opportunity you have (Santorini) or you end up on the plane with 20 oiks with nothing on their mind but getting mashed as fast as possible (Crete).

We had our own honeymoon in Greece and we hired a traditional Greek cottage in the north of the island of Paxos near a harbour-front village called Loggos. It was quiet, secluded, (we had our own beach), absolutely beautiful, and we had a hire car so we could get to the fleshpots of the capital, Gaios, if we wanted some company (on honeymoon?) or a bit of a buzz. There is also the island of Antipaxos just off the main island which, if you can get a local boat to take you there for breakfast before the hordes arrive, is just one of the most beautiful places in Greece I think. You can actually stay at Antipaxos, but that may be just a little too isolated and could be over-powering when the tourist boats come in off the main island.

We booked through the Greek Islands Club (see link below - I don't work for them honest) and they were excellent. The other links will give you some further insight into this beautiful island.

Although there are lot of excellent places in Greece for honeymoon I would recomend (if you can efford to pay for a 4 stars Hotel) ''Blue Marine Hotel'' located at Ammoudara of St Nicolas Crete island. It is a beutiful hotel with excellent service, food and view as well as excellent SPA services.

This Hotel is a newlly established Hotel (5/2006), I stayed there on August.
From the Hotel if you wish there are several places you can visit in short distance.
For period of July I surely suggest islands but not in a very crowded island.
Have a nice time wherever you decide to go!

I agree with Karpenisi regarding Macaw Lov...

I would recommend you Santorini (it's very romantic and something completely different), especially if you could stay in some hotel curved into the volcanic rock. It's quite an experience!
Another alternative is Corfu, if you can find something at Ai-Gordis -only on the top of the cliff- or Kefallonia, in the Ionian Sea.
You could also try Mykonos island but if your taste goes like Nature Lovers, you can also try the Evros Delta close to Alexandroupoli in the North of Greece, close to the Turkish borders. From there, you could also visit Istanbul, have thus a double experience.

However, I would recommend you to avoid July (unless you refer to the period 1-15) because it is overcrowded and the prices are very high.

If you need any information, any of us, Greeks, would be glad to help you out.

The friendly travel agent poster is violating the Guidelines of this forum by advertising her services - nono.

Anyway, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos are popular with honeymooners

Mainland Greece does not have much to offer other than Delphi. I recommend purchasing Fodor's guide to Greece. July is active tourist season in Greece and a cruise may be the better alternative - most cruises will stop at the islands I listed earlier. If you're archaeology buffs, Ancient Olympia and Phillippi are nice treks into the countryside.

Definitely the islands there. Athens is actually kind of dirty. Have you ever considered a Mediterranean Cruise? July is definitely high season over there. I have had several clients sail with various cruise lines there, depends really on your age group and how you like to travel to know which cruise line would be the best. Or there are some good companies that do land with island hopping and you can sometimes do a partial cruise between the islands.

I could definitely help you with this if you like. I would need to ask more questions before I could really recommend further.

Email me if you like. Either way though I would strongly consider going through a Travel Agent. There are many reasons to do so, including price wise. Especially a Honeymoon is just to important to mess up!
