Squares are used in flooring. Tiles, Rugs and Olenolin all are measured in square feet. Now lets suppose they have 10 square feet and you have a 5 by 5 room. You could take the square root of 10. A little over 3 and you would know you needed more rug. You could of course square 5 which equals 25 and still know that you wouldn't have enough.
Squares are also used in roofing, painting and paving. In each I'm sure the square root comes in handy too.
