I have two answers for this. The media focuses in on towns and areas that have a low crime rate and all of a sudden something like this happens and it could be the worst thing that happened in years. It stays in the news because people Tune In and are eaten up by that information. I've had friends that went to schools in Jersey City and Newark, NJ where there were stabbings, shootings, etc. every week that NEVER made the paper, or headline news. Real answer to the question: Desperation - when someone goes to that extent. Where they have to take a gun and grab kids and take hostages. They are indirectly calling out for help. The problem was no one heard their call until now. Some others will hear something like this on the news and follow suit and think they're not going to hurt anyone. There are books you can read that dwell into the minds of a criminal if you really want.

Why are we so surprised that it's happening? It's rarely news when it happens in a neighborhood in South Central and it's certainly not national news. Violence at school has always taken place, the ante's just been raised.

We also teach our children from a young age that killing and violence are ok (taking small kids hunting and fishing???) and we tolerate subversive and secretive behaviour.

TV is a babysitter. And that's not NYPD Blue's fault or South Park's fault, it's the parents' fault. When "Halo" is permitted with no constructive parenting, or worse, with violent parents, we damage our children and teach them that violence is ok.

There is no cure. You can't unring the bell. Once they've learned that violence at school is an option, they will never forget it and disturbed children will want to go out in a blaze of glory.

Im sorry to say but American Culture is somehow very violent (well not the culture in whole but um...maybe the TV shows ?) compared to other countries in the world, i never really heard of such serious school violence, sure there's fights everywhere, but no1 really dies from it, just cuts and bruises....not shot wounds and broken limbs

Well im south east asian who came to America for the education 3 years ago and i really have never seen anything like this before..

------------

I dont think these students have any mental problems, even if they did, how'd these "mental situations" surface only at the age of 17 ? (well i presume) but not at an earlier age, this kid probably got driven up the wall by someone else, coz when someone gets emotionally unstable, they'd do crazy things...
getting too sad leads to suicide
getting too angry leads to violence
etc. etc.

and um, well that's what i think...

--------------------------

on the violent shows and violent video games topic...
well, i've been an avid gamer since i was around 6, owned a playstation when it came out and owned practically all english games (well more than 200 i can guarantee tat ), this was when i was around 7-9 years old, i was brought up watching chinese kung fu movies and american action movies

i didnt turn out violent, this of course was thanks to my parent's raising, movies and games are just forms of entertainment to satisfy our imagination, it isnt something that we really should be imitating (well in terms of violent entertainment)

i'm just 17 and i dont go around carrying a grudge against everyone, if i get angry coz of something, i have learnt how to deal with it..

i guess it's all about upbringing, if the alot of people outside america can live without killing their peers (well, people schooling in other countries) im pretty sure these cases shudnt reallly have happened in the first place

These killing are so horrible. I'm older & I hate the idea that so many young people are dying. What a waste of healthy young lives. The fear children must endure just going to school. These are suppose to be the best yrs. of their young lives. I feel for all of you.

That is just terrible. You go to school to learn and you are supposed to feel safe. But now a days you need to be on your guard all the time because you can gett stabbed or shot. It is just crazy if you ask me.

This girl was desperate eh because girls I know might just slap the boy who cheated on them but nothing that serious but I sure she could have gotten a new boyfriend. I believe that they need to have mandatory metal detector checks of every student in order to get in school.

Too many parents let their children raise themselves on vidieo games and TV set they do not make the best baby sitters. Kids were brought up playing violent games such as grand theft auto and war games and they are starting to confuse reality with the games they play.

Laxity in school security measures. How did these young boys were able to sneak in a firearm/s if the security personnel are doing their job. Now, its too late for any measures to be taken.

I think there are a lot of kids who haven't been told that they have done something wrong, and they haven't been shown consequences. When people worry more about a child's "self-esteem" than his morals and ethics, you get what's happening now. My parents spanked me, (they didn't BEAT me, they spanked me) and I KNEW that there were things I wasn't supposed to do - and I didn't do them, because I knew there were consequences.
