Superior hardware, design and software. They are the Mercedes Benz of computers. They are worth every penny. You don't have to go with the 20-inch iMac. The Mac mini is more affordable and plenty powerful. If you want the best, you have to pay for it. Macs may cost more upfront, but you'll end up spending less than you would on a PC over the life-span of the Macintosh. There's less software to buy, less need for upgrades and such. The Mac has a much longer life than a PC.

I agree in part with Ang. The fewer of an item produced, the higher the price. I saw some years ago, a graph on cost of producing any item. As the quantity went up by ten fold, it got somewhat cheaper, and once it hit the millions the price dropped dramatically.

But, there is a reason for this. The first Intel mass produced computer was the IBM. It cost a lot of money in 1980 or so. Later, the company opened the technical specifications and let anyone who wished to make them, to make them legally.

for a long time, these were called "ibm-compatibles".

Guess what competition does to prices?

There is no real competition to Mac. And, I think this is somewhat true for their software. You can buy thousands or tens of thousands of programs for the Ibm compatibles. You can also get thousands of apps free for Ibm compats.

The tech requirements for programs for the Ibm compats was also opened up. Instantly, thousands of people wrote their own programs. And, this difference guaranteed domination for Ibm's.

Heck, I even wrote a program for impedance transformation on electronic equipment on the B-2 project for a subcontractor, that at the time I retired was officially used. And, I am not exactly a real programmer.

Because they have to depend on their normal 28 sales per year to afford the whole entire company. lol. Just kidding of course. The real reason is because they do have costs that we dont have with the Platforms that most of us use. The two different platforms do not work together, as the technology that was used went different directions. As an example, Sprint with their push to talk merged with Nextel who has their own walkie talkie service. Unfortunately, their technologies went different directions in the begining and now, even though they've merged, the two customers cant walkie talkie together. With Windows XP, Home or Pro, Techs like myself can (with permission of course) enter into your machine when you're having specialty problems and fix the problems for you while you sit back and enjoy watching. Makes our work a lot easier, however, the platform doesnt allow for us to enter and help anyone that's on Mac Platform. Great question. Larry.
