I would say Hendrix was one of the best but the late Rory Gallagher was great and so was Alvin Lee of Ten Years After...Zakk Wylde can play the chops but could never play like the players I listed...He uses too many effects, processers, etc between the guitar and the amp and those are just talent boosters!!

Jimmy Hendrix was very good as was Santana and both very popular for the music they played. For overall versality and a master of string instruments, though not as popular as the aforementioned, was ROY CLARK. For another gifted musician pick up a CD by "Estaban". If you're looking to emulate a master watch the fingers and hands of the two guys I've mentioned.

I think Jimmyi Hendrix is the man, why? easy...
who play the guitar on the back? with the teeth? even to get a special sound on his guitar he used his five fingers on the strings, he could go from heavy metal to a slow blues (have you heard him in Woodstock?). In fact he opened the nowadays way to play heavy metal on the guitar.

tough question. it's hard to name just one. IMO, Yngwie Malmstein, Eddie VanHalen, and Buckethead have to be on the top of my list. Everyone prolly knows Buckethead as GNR's new guitarist, but he has many solo albums, and his versatility and originality are second to none.
