So easy.. just telephone or web search the California State Contractor's Board. They should be licensed and bonded, and if a complaint has come up it should be resolved successfully. Only hire a licensed contractor.

Contact the CSLB, California State License Board, either by phone or e-mail (cslb.gov). Enter the contractor's license number and any registered complaints will be listed complete with the outcome.

Easily. two ways:
a) Call the Better Business Bureau (BBB)
b) Call the ROC (Registrar of Contractors)
either or both would have that information... It is great that you want to check because people(service types, plumbers, etc) are getting more and more into the rip-off mode and it behooves all individuals using contractors to check up on them first

Go to your state's info site ( in Florida, we have myflorida.com.)Once you are in, go to the Construction Industry Licensing Board's section and enter the contractor's name and if you have the info, his license type (registered building contractor, certified general contractor, etc.) and license number is great, but not necessary. Any info that there is on him will come up. Make SURE you spell his name or the name of his business correctly. If no info comes up, he isn't licensed.
