A megalopolis is a combination of the metropolitan areas of several cities whose suburbs have grown together, making one big chain. The main one people talk about in the U.S. is the urban area along the eastern seaboard, which extends from New Hampshire into Virginia. Major cities included in it are Boston, Providence, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington. (Richmond is sometimes included as well.) This is far larger than any other megalopolis in America. Other places that sometimes get the title are Lake Michigan (including Milwaukee, Chicago, and smaller cities extending into Indiana, Michigan, and central Wisconsin), the Flordia coast (Miami to Jacksonville), southern California (San Diego/Los Angeles/Anaheim/Riverside), the San Francisco Bay area (San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose. sometimes extending to Sacramento), the Puget Sound area in Washington (Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia), the North Texas metroplex (Dallas/Ft. Worth and environs), the Rocky Mountain foothills (Denver/Colorado Springs/Pueblo, sometimes extending to Cheyenne) and the Gulf Coast region (especially pre-Katrina ... New Orleans/Gulfport/Mobile, sometimes extending to Baton Rouge)
