except for times in history following the collapse of a civilization, people have always improved technology. ideas and innovations in science build on earlier knowledge.

the last 100 years have accellerated the improvement because of better transportation and better communications. when people get around more and communicate more easily there are more ideas shared and knowledge increases faster.

it's just that about 100 years ago a bunch of people just had really good ideas at about the same time. (the industrial revolution) we came up with the battery, light bulb, tv, phone, camera, and a whole bunch of other stuff around then.

Not at all. We aren't taught about the critical advances of those in the past. What do you know about Newton? That he discovered gravity, or that he incidentally discovered calculus? He invented calculus in order to prove that his simplified formula for gravitational attraction worked for something on the surface of a sphere. Like us standing on the earth.

Actually I would put a lot of the credit to the Enlightenment (Age of Reason) and eschewing the holy bible as the arbiter of all scientific knowledge.
