When laying tile in a bathroom, is it better to go around, or under the toilet?

This is a no-brainer. Unscrew the bolts, lift the toilet and stuff a large rag into the hole so nothing goes in during the constuction or nothing comes out. Sometimes rats will come up through the sewer pipe. Once the tile job is complete and grout is dry, replace the wax seal and then the toilet. Caulk the toilet at the base once it is replaced. It is unlikely that you will need any extenders or anything complicated. This may be a good time to replace the toilet and make everything new.

Good Luck!

I would suggest paying a contractor because there are many things that can go wrong. ...sub floor has bounce, so tiles don't stay down, grout cracks, putting a toilet over tiles (you need to lift the toilet, and reset it after the tiles are laid. You will also need to cut the tiles around the ABS and that can be a bit difficult too.) then the toilet can still leak causing damage. But if you are a good DIYer, then go to Home Depot or Rona and take a seminar.

Well.... Many tilers who think you are dumb and ignorant will go up TO the base of the toilet because it is easier for them.... BUT which is better.. BY FAR.. the BEST way(do not let tilers tell you differently) is to remove the toilet and tile up to the hole in the floor. Aftre the tile is laid and cured.. then the wax ring is fitted..(for your information: always buy a NEW wax ring before resetting the toilet).. I have done this many many times.

theres a plastic collar that raises the toilet up as far as necessary at depot and the new wax ring for a new seal around the base to keep water and methane out of the room ,just tile up to the rim around the new spacer and then after the grout and sealer drop inthe new wax ring and then the toilet in and replace the bolts with new ,,ask at depot about this whole process when buying the new collar made of plastic to lift the toilet to the new level ..,,, two things have lots of news papers to set the toilet down on after removing the bolts and dip out all the water after removing the waterline and then after lifting out the toilet set it in the hall on some plastic and a few papers to soak up the water now scrape and clean the old wax seal and rubber gasket and throw into a newspaper its rank then stuff a ball of newspapers in to the hole to keep out the smell and the gases, now tile to the edges as close as posible and grout and seal then place the spacer into the hole it slips in then a new wax ring with a gasket built in, then line the bolts up and replace the toilet on them and size them and bolt down now sit on the lid and retighten the bolts the wax ring drops and the seal is finished now replace the water line and wipe the area and the toilet with a clorox wipe also that may have been a good idea before this whole process

Depends if the flange is high enough. If you have too big of a gap between the bottom of the toilet and the flange the wax ring may not do its job. I would recommend going around the toilet with the tile just to be safe.

Lift the toilet and tile up to the drain pipe flange. When you reset the stool (with a new wax ring), use silicon caulking to waterproof the seam. If your going to do a job, do it right the first time. You should not have to extend the flange for one layer of tile, but you might want to look at the condition of the bolts.

You cannot cut tile to fit flush around the toilet base. The commode must be pulled and reset on top the tile. If the commode ever has to be replaced, the base will never be identical to an old one.

you should remove the toilet and then lay the tile. Dont forget to put down a new wax ring when reinstalling the toilet.

go under but you may need to extend the soil pipe for a proper fit to the toilet. Not a big deal and it means doing the job correctly.

Also......if you go around the toilet will feel too close to the floor.
