Bill Haley and the Comets sang the opening song to a movie called Black Board Jungle released in Sept 1955 and the song was "Rock around the Clock" I read stories about fights breaking out at the movie theatre and teens dancing in the aisles to this song. Sidney Poitier starred in this movie. This was when rock & roll became a moving force in the USA. Allen Freed coined the phrase"Rock and Roll" at a Cleveland station that very month

The origin came from Black American music from the South,most of the White artists that came along in the 50s rerecorded material that was performed by Black artists and they changed the beat some and made a hit out of it and White America and the World thought they had written those songs and the majority of your Black artists never got any royalties from their work,Elvis did it The Beatles did it,Bill Haley and the Comets copied the Black style and countless others as well as The Stones etc.etc.

I would say that Elvis is the one that really kicked off rock n roll music, after all, he is the King of Rock...haha. :)
