Status in America is no longer defined so much by race, but instead socioeconomics. Sure the percentages are still pretty skewed, but the time that has passed has only been 140 years. That's the equivalent of only 6 or 7 generations. And as with any race or gender, it takes money to make money. Most former slaves started with zilch, so make the connection. Education also plays a HUGE role. One last side note is that economically successful blacks surely do not receive the low status that you are talking about.

To be honest (and this is in no way meant to be a racist generalisation) I think that it is often the case with within parts of such "outsider" communities, that much of the problem comes from within - that such attitudes of resentment work in both directions... how often do you here of ****** feeling that is wrong for members of their "community" to date those outside their sphere (especially Caucasians), as if it it is somehow looking down on their own kind. To be honest I believe that much of the problems faced have to do with deep-set attitudes found in both camps - unfortunately with outsider communities (for want of a much better term) it becomes a part of that community's self-identity. So deep is it set (and I can even see this in your own question) that it can be seen as a form of betrayal NOT to hold such resentments.
Now I realise that this does not cover all the problems at hand, but much of the problem will continue to exsist until the point comes where BOTH parties can learn to set aside such negative cultural barriers to find common grounds. So long as one blames the other for their hardship, the problem will continue to flourish
The same can be said for Aboriginals here.

Most of them are drug dealers or gang bangers. Their only aspirations growing up are to be a professional basketball player, a rapper, or own a record company. The few that are able to reach those goals end up doing the same things that drug dealers and gang bangers do; the only difference being that they'll receive a small penalty because they have money. So basically, they're looked down upon because they don't really want to contribute to the good of society, they just want to line their pockets and be thugs.

I had a Black American roommate, and when we'd be driving through the Black part of town, she'd dive to lock the doors. The problem is that there's a high level of violence and crime among the Black Americans. I personally have been mugged various times, and raped twice.

That is the problem of the foreigner. Blacks have the same advantages as whites. If someone denies that, that is probably because they are bitter toward whites or some other race. I really don't care. And um, blacks were NOT the only slaves in America. Poor whites were also.
