When I put CD'S in it nothing happens, and the hard drive doesn't recognize that It's even there.

The hard drive actually has nothing to do with recognizing it. But that's a different story. The cable connecting it to the motherboard may be out, but the power in (which would explain it opening and closing), or the motor could be out, or it just might have crapped out on you and may be broken. I can't tell you specifically what's wrong without seeing it.

did it work before? what has changed if it did? if it worked before and you haven't done anything to your PC, it may be a hardware failure. If it never has worked, it still may be a hardware failure, or you may need to check your drivers, right click on my computer and select manage, then select device manager, check the cd drive there and see if updating the drivers helps.
