Re. the earlier comments on dust, this is a significant health issue for allergy sufferers. Carpets trap dust, leading to dust mites, which are a major cause of asthma. Many modern carpets also contain artificial fibres which release allergenic, and possibly carcinogenic, volatile compounds into the home. (This is also true of artificial wooden surfaces such as laminates). In a modern home where ventilation is carefully limited these chemicals can build up to significant levels. I would generally choose a real wood floor, or tile or stone in a kitchen or bathroom. I would always seal the floor using natural waxes or oils. If a softer surface is needed rugs can always be washed at a high temperature to kill dust mites - carpets are more difficult.

That depends on a number of things...a) your pocket book if you have the funds to put in a wooden flooring; b) what are your particular likes and dislikes... since you are the one living there.. NOW>>YOU DID ASK ME.. so.. I will tell you what I think.. I would prefer wooden in the dining room and carpet in the lounge... and if not carpet in the lounge, TILE in the lounge with throw rugs around... Just last week.... I completed tiling my whole house... (with tile) I have no more carpet

Wooden flooring looks great but it can be noisy.
In a dining room knives and forks do sometimes crash to the ground and they make an incredible noise on a wooden floor.
If you like to sit or lie on the lounge floor, wood can be both hard and cold - but nice thick rugs easily solve that.

Agree that one's personal taste determines which look you like, but the dust issue leads me to a different conclusion. Living on carpet that traps dust may appear cleaner, but even the cleanest person ends up living on a trapped pile of dirt and dust compared to a cleaned hardwood floor. This seems inevitable even with professional cleaning unless you change the carpet frequently. Instead, a quick sweep with a swiffer or the like and occasional cleaning with a steam cleaner (they basically work like a steam iron with a cotton pad underneath on a long handle if you're not familiar) and you can see the floor is clean and looks great vs. ?.

Wooden flooring can be cold and unyielding in a living room. It is also incredibl noisy and echo-ey. Carpets bring warmth cosiness and comfort. Also quiet and super comfy to lie / roll around on . Wooden floors excellent for kitchen BUT make sure that the type you choose can withstand water and spillages etc

It is all taste.
I like the appearance of a wood floor. You can also put down an area rug to change up the look and easily change it or remove it for a difff look or when the rug wears out.

we live in a concrete house, in the winters it was always freezing, so when i got this house the first thing i did was put a wooden floor down... none of your laminate stuff. i bought a pack of boards and laid them with Upva glue..and i did some fancy cornerwork which locked it all together. then i sanded it with the machine we use to prep cars for painting..iand then i wire wooled it...it was sock surfing smooth...the kids loved it... and we used yacht varnish..that was just over ten years ago... weve got 2 daughters, (and their friends) 4 dogs, and one or two cats... in that time we've stripped it and revarnished once...
and its lovely...its warm, its nice underfoot, when you drop cups or dishes 9 times out of 10 they bounce... and best of all, it creaks, just like a real wood floor... ten years ago it cost me less than £100, and took me a week to do...
the laminates might look good, but theyre essentially plastic coated MDF... and theyre cold underfoot...and its so easy to do a crap job of fitting..unless you pay lots...and get someone in.

Tile interior the bogs and laundry room and get admission to. extra handy to scrub, saves electrical energy because of the fact it would not want vacuuming. Use Swiffer® products to scrub it relatively. Carpeting has airborne dirt and dirt mites and an excellent style of allergens in it. It additionally get stains and desires shampooing, this motives mildew. you may scatter throw rugs contained in the direction of the homestead in case you want to supply it a "warmer" look. additionally, placed stick on felt pads decrease than the legs of the furnishings so it would not scratch the timber.
