a class consists of 11 boys and 13 girls. if 1 of the boys is absent and 2 of the girls are absent, what fraction of the entire class is absent?

Alright. A fraction consists of this: Your top number, the numerator, and the bottom number, or denominator. You first want to get the denominator. To do this, you add up how many kids are in the class all together, including the absent ones.

11 + 13 = 24 students

We already know the top number. That's the total of students absent.

1 boy + 2 girls = 3 students.

So your fraction now reads 3/24 (read three twenty-fourths). But this can be reduced, because both numbers are divisible by 3.

Your final fraction is 1/8 (read one eighth).

-1 boy-2 girls=3 people absent
3/24..... reduce that and you'll get 1/8

since you are wanting to find the fraction of the entire class, find the total number of students.
11+13= 24
then find the total of students who were absent.
1+2=3
take the total number of absent kids over the total number if kids
3/24
then simplify
1/8
