yeah it used to be a bad habbit of mine "hey are you going w. us?" me: "huh (or what), yeah i think i am". i broke out of it but my brother does it allll the time and he sounds dumb. i think its just on impulse.

Built in self defense mechanism. what ? gives You a few more seconds to form an semi- intelligent answer even though, You may not even know what the other person is talking about.

Sometimes to warn the speaker that they said something out of line; sometimes to see if they're dumb enough to repeat it; sometimes because I can't believe they even said it the first time.

Yes I've done that. I don't really know why. I think that I'll be daydreaming. I'll hear what the person is saying but will not really be paying attention.

Hehehe yeah. I did that when my boyfriend (now ex) asked me marry him...first time was shock, second time was to buy time, third time was my way of saying "have you lost your damn mind?!"
