SMUDGIE,
If you are having problems sleeping you really need to get a Doctor to send you to a Sleep Lab for a overnight sleep study. They will attach a few wires on you as well as an EEG to record your brain waves and a camera to record how you move during the night! A Doctor who specializes in sleep disorders will review the session with you! You might have a twitchy foot keeping you from sleeping a real good sleep! There are all sorts of things that can happen that mess with our sleep!
Now Sleep Apnea means when oxygen is cut off from your brain it happens in 2 ways.
One way your airway collapses and blocks the airflow this could also be the tonsils or adnoids maybe the tongue BUT it is where the air is blocked of like a valve and cannot get into your lungs!
The other type( this one I have) and lots of people have when you go into a deep sleep called REM (rapid eye movement) your eyes actually jerk around during this time, Your body is on auto pilot breathing is automatic. Now auto breath misses a breath or 20 your brain sences it is high on carbon dioxide and wakes the body just enough to signal a gasp for breath! What happens is when the person with this condition would be say passed out from alcohol HE WOULD SIMPLY NEVER AWAKE AND WOULD DIE!
I NEARLY DIED WHILE UNDER ANESTHESA IN A VERY SIMPLE OPERATION ==== I SIMPLY STOPPED BREATHING!!! THE NEXT WEEK I WAS IN A SLEEP LAB!!!
BELIEVE ME SLEEP APNEA DOES KILL DEAD LIKE IT DARN NEAR GOT ME!
I have never felt better in my life since going to the sleep lab and getting tuned up! Sleep disorders in so far as not sleeping well is not the concern of the Department of Transportation NOW if your disorder were one where your fell asleep without warning that would be a different matter!
GOING TO A SLEEP LAB WILL MAKE YOU A SAFER DRIVER AND WILL MAKE EVERY HOUR OF SLEEP MORE EFFECTIVE REST FOR YOU I PROMISE! YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR PLEASE!
I AM ADDING THIS JUST TODAY A DRIVER CRASHED HIS RIG ON INTERSTATE HE FELL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL LOST WENT OFF THE ROAD DO NOT KNOW IF HE WILL LIVE! YOU NEED YOUR SLEEP OR THIS COULD BE YOU! PLEASE GO TO A DOCTOR SLEEP APNEA IS NOT ONE OF THE DEPT OF TRANS DRIVING DISQUALIFING DISEASES! BUT LACK OF TREATMENT MAKES YOU A DRIVING HAZARD ON THE ROAD! I PROMISE YOU THAT YOU WILL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER! DRIVERS GET SO LITTLE SLEEP ANYWAY!
BE SAFE.
I PROMISE YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!
KEEP IT BETWEEN THE LINES!
DRIVE CAREFUL HEAR

Do go to the doctor, it will help I have it too and I use my brothers cpap machine and I do sleep much better. For years I snored and I also stopped breathing, I would wake up when I got a little sleep with a massive headache every time.
Your employer can not stop you from seeing a doctor and you can not lose your job over it, if you do you have a law suit against your employer.
The good thing is, the cpap can plug into a cigarette lighter and you can take it on the road with you, when you want to sleep.
Sleep apnea is some times caused by your muscles in your neck to collapse over your air ways thus choking you and yes it can lead to stroke, heart attack and many more problems.
Get your self help, then you will be a new person again.
Good luck and stay with us.

Tretamnets For Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder involving recurrent uneasy and interrupted breathing during sleep, which leads to discontinuity in the patient’s sleep.
Mild to moderate sleep apnea lasts for about 10 – 30 seconds while in severe cases it may last up to 3 minutes. Estimates show that United States alone has over 12 million people suffering from this condition.
Sleep apnea can be of 2 types. Obstructive Sleep Apnea leads to recurrent hypoxemia with awakening while Central Sleep Apnea involves problems in the breathing centers in the brain.
Chief symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring, excessive sleeping in the daytime (hypersomnolence) and restless sleep. Besides these, it is also associated with choking or gasping during sleep, unrefreshing sleep, , poor judgment etc.
The aim of any treatment is to keep the airway patent and avert any pauses in the breathing. Numerous methods are used such as avoidance of alcohol and CNS depressants near bedtime, weight reduction and sleep posture modification.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) prevents collapse of throat by blowing pressurized air through the nose gently.
Oral or dental appliances can open the space behind the throat by relocating the lower jaw and the tongue.
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a common procedure which broadens the airway by removing the surplus tissue such as tonsils, adenoids, uvula etc.
Laser-assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is opted to either remove a part of the soft palate, shorten the uvula or any other extra tissue in the pharynx, which may cause obstruction.
Tracheostomy is a method to make an opening in the trachea, which is also known as the windpipe. A tube is inserted through the opening and is opened only while sleeping so as to facilitate direct passage of air to the lungs.
If you or anyone you know suffers from similar complaints, it is advised to see a physician, as it is a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.

Hi, I wasn't going to respond until I read so many people tell you that is is unusual to die from this condition. This condition is very serious and people often die in there sleep, not choking and gasping for air as one person said but simply do not wake up and die in there sleep. HOWEVER, now that you know the problem and your husband is treated the condition can be kept under control. My husband also has sleep apnea, he often stopped breathing for a few seconds then would shake and start up again. Also, he was always so tired when he would drive that I was worried he would fall asleep at the wheel so I made him go to the doctor and I wrote a note sent to the nurse to make sure he would bring it up because he thought it was no big deal. Turns out he did have the condition and now wears the breathing machine at night and we both sleep better. It does take a while to get used to for both of you but be persistant because it is very important that he uses it properly and consistantly. If he is not using it properly he will breathe through his mouth and then wake with a terrible thirst but with continued use this will become more natural for him, we leave a bottle of water at the bedside. Please encourage him to use it every night. My husband occasionally says he is not going to use the machine because he knows how soundly he now sleeps and doesn't want to sleep through my health problems but I tell him his dying on me won't help me so please put the machine on. That strategy has worked for me.

Go to a sleep clinic. Apnea can be helped. I was falling up steps, not able to concentrate and many other things. My gen. practioner suggested sleep clinic. I stopped breathing 62 times a minute. Now have sleep aid and I feel great. Can get up in the morning and be myself again.

Sleep apnea is dangerous if untreated. It greatly increases your risk of death by stroke or heart attack. An employer cannot discriminate against you if you have a chronic illness or disability, that is why we have the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Get your apnea treated, being disabled with a stroke will feel a lot worse than any risk to your job.

as far as i no sleep apnea is when u temporarily stop breathing in your sleep, its normally associated with being over weight. I dont think you will lose your job as a driver for it, because you dont sleep while driving-i hope. see your GP they will give you a little box to wear while you sleep so they can asses the seriousness of the condition.

what happens between you and your doctor is private, no way you can lose your job. Don't be afraid, ask your doctor to order a sleep study. The sooner you get some decent sleep, the safer you will be on the road.
