i have an old 1790's house that gets very cold. the house has a low piched gable roof, the attic is not useable. it has a small pannel in the ceilling. i want to get bags of the old blown in insulation and shoot it where i cant get to,with a leaf blower and a pick up tube. the problem is i cant get the old cellulose, lose fill stuff anywhere. so i have a woodshop down stairs with a chip colector, if i blow a thick layer in the attic, then spray it with a flame retardent made for coating wood. can anyone see any problems with that?

One big one -- termites!!! Most home centers that sell the cellulose insulation also rent the machines to blow it in place.

Wood ships will provide dissappointing insulative qualities and will take up the space in your attic into which you could have installed an effective product. There are several generations of types and quality levels of insulation since cellulose. At my Home Depot there is a rental department from which you can rent a device to blow in loose insulation, which you can also purchase at HD. There is probably no insulation in your walls either, so filling the attic will likely not be a comprehensive solution. Suggest you consult an insulation subcontractor.

Not a good idea, fire retardant will not do it, and it will not actually work that well as an insulation. foam will work better and will fill in hard to get to voids.
