Media players any good ?

I am thinking of purchasing a wireless media box to sum it up it basically connects wirelessy to your pc that can be upstairs and then all of your pics / videos / net / etc can be viewed on your tele.

what i'd like to know are they any good i will be using it with a new plasma tele and sony vaio laptop. Pro and cons please !

Ohh man if you want to do this the best way get a modded xbox, with xbox media centre...
