They need to know when the seasons will occur. When to, for example, loose their leaves. This happens about the same time each year. It is not controlled by temp. but by day light. Singling the plants that it time to shut down for the winter, then wake up for the summer.

If the leaves would not drop off the vascular tubes connecting them could be damaged, or the bud which forms next years leaves would not form.

Some other reasons would be to flower at the correct time for insects to be active to pollinate; to grow seeds or fruit in time to mature; or to make excess food for winter storage.
