Most citizens of Massachusetts were Congregationalists. Although at the time many of them would have been classified as Anglicans. The correct answer is that they were Congregationalists.

I recieved a M.A. in American History at a great University in New England so I know I speak correctly on this subject. Good Luck!!!

Update - a number of people have written the correct answer was they were Puritans. The Congregationalists were Puritans - but so were the Presbyterians in Connecticut and the Baptists in Rhode Island. Puritianism was not a religous belief system (or denomination) - it was a belief that the Anglican Church needed to be purified of what they saw as Roman Catholic impurities.

The Pilgrims who settled Massachusetts are generally classified as Puritans. Their called their churches Congregational churches, to stress that it was the congregation that had power, rather than a bishop or other higher earthly authority. Interestingly, their church (one of the most conservative Christian denominations ever formed) was the basis for today's United Church of Christ (one of the most liberal of all Christian denominations).

How specific an answer do you want? Do you want to know which denomination of Christianity was the most prevalent or are you okay with knowing that Christianity was the most prevalent? God, as in Jesus our Christ, Bless you.
