Plug it in and wait for it to heat up. Cottons -- use the hottest setting. Shiny fabrics or polyesters or rayons....use a low setting. Don't hold the iron in one place for more than a couple seconds on clothing, or you will make a burn mark on it. Oh, and I recommend buying a spray bottle to put water in. For a cotton shirt that is wrinkled, spray a little water on the shirt first, section by section as you iron it. It does wonders with wrinkles. OH, one more thing! Here is the correct order in which to iron a shirt: Do the collar first, then the placket (across the back of the shoulders), then the sleeves, and then start on one side of the front and work around to the other side.

1. Get out an ironing board and the iron.

2. Turn on the iron and set the heat setting. Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironing for temperature settings. Be sure not to go too hot or you can melt your clothing. If you're working with cotton, it's generally fine to go as high as your iron will go. Synthetics are usually the victim of melting.

I generally prefer to steam my ironing. If you're going to do this, fill the iron with distilled water- there should be a hole at the top of the iron to put water into, and a clear column where you can monitor the water level. It's important that the water is distilled or the minerals in the water will crystallize on your iron and ruin it.

3. Wait 3-5 minutes for the iron to heat up.

4. Lay out the garment to be ironed on the iron board and run the iron firmly along the garment. Keep in mind the natural creases of the garment while you press- ie. the pleats of a kilt. It should be relatively obvious what should be wrinkle free and what should be creased.

5. Turn iron off.

PS: Don't touch the iron. It'll be hot.

Plug in the iron. Move the iron evenly along the shirt. When you're done with one side, flip the shirt over and do the same to the other side

Get the iron really hot - then place it on the collar, leave it there for about 10 mins - that should teach you.

You are a college student!! Part of the learning curve is to figure things out. Was this just being smart? Trial and error makes a person learn fast. Give it a try!!
