That the government owns the major functions of society such as healthcare, water, and electric.
All of those would be free in a just society. Have you ever been sick and not gone to the doctor because you could not affor it? Needed water to bathe? A/Cin the summer and heat in the winter but didn't use it because you could not afford it? In my idea of Socialism those things are covered.

The government can try to move America in a socialist direction as much as it wants, but it won't happen. Let's look at the worst case scenario and it does happen: It will fail and we will vote out the people in charge and the new people will reverse it. SOCIALISM DOES NOT WORK and Americans will NOT tolerate it because Americans demand success. The Democrats can try their hardest to use fear tactics on the poor and minorities to get their agenda across, but it will never happen. They just use the socialism strategy to get votes. The U.S.A. is already broke. If we implemented universal health care, we would be so broke our economy would go directly into the toilet and would never come out. The crazy liberals will tell you how great socialized medicine is, but here are the facts: 1. You have to wait weeks when you have an EMERGENCY. 2. Health professionals don't like the idea and it will affect them the most. 3. Whenever you make something economically equal the quality goes down. America has the best health care quality in the world. 4. If it's so great, why do so many Canadians come to America for surgeries? 5. When wealth gets redistributed only two economic classes exist: Very Rich and Dirt Poor. The "very rich" group has all the people in the government. The "dirt poor" group is everyone else. 6. When you remove competition from something incentive reduces. Without incentive people do not produce. Why would somebody work hard to be a good Doctor when Dr. Joe Hackjob gets the same pay? 7. The Declaration of Independence offers all Americans life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This does not GUARANTEE that all Americans will be happy or have a fair shake. Get over it. 8. The only people who like the idea of socialism are disadvantaged whiners who aren't willing to work harder and crazy left wing ideologues who want to control how other people live. If you want watered down health care, inferior education, a poor economy, and the government telling you how to live your life, then Socialism/Communism is the government for you. If you love America, if you wake up every day thankful to have been born in America, if you believe in work ethic of Americans, if you want America to be YOUR America when your children and grand children inherit it, then support AMERICA. America is a country that is mostly capitalist mixed with MINOR socialism. Period. Let's keep it that way. God bless America.

Its a system of cradle to grave entitlements given to people in a good many countries. Where a high level of taxation to all citizens produces a hand out society where everyone expects government to handle its social, health and employment programs. Also a certain percentage of the countries GNP is geared toward this goal. As one worker from the soviet union said to a member of the 60 minutes news team during an interview. "They Pretend To Pay Us, We Pretend To Work"! This was 1988, there is no more USSR, wonder why? Is this what anyone would want?

Hi Sway:
Socialism is a government that is geared to stay as a government entity and not as a working class environment.
In a socialist country, the rules are set out for you as well as everything else in your life and your future. Most socialist countries make the youth join the military at 18 with no exceptions.
Imagine taking everything that you have right now, your rights ,your freedom, your choices in life and your travels and having someone else in control of them.
That's what socialism is my friend.
Thanks

My idea of socialism is where a government believes it knows better of what's good for you than you do. That includes property rights, jobs, education, basically what part of the social ladder you should belong in.
It may not be the dictionary description, I didn't look.

system of social organization in which property and the distribution of income are subject to social control rather than individual determination or market forces.
I think it is a very idealistic concept, but sadly will never work due to human nature (greed, competition, and addiction).

How about The Ten Commandments to begin with.
Secondly: The teaching by Jesus.
That is socialism, isn't it?
