I am looking for an old city or county map of Florida, Missouri. I need either a surveyors map or what ever I can get. Even a written description of the land. I would like it to date back as far as 150 years ago. I need to know if there was an actual settlement or town during the horse and buggy era.

As a genealogist living in Missourah, perhaps I can offer a couple of viable suggestions. I will put the free choices first ... they're easily accessible and usually the best source of information.

1. Local Historical Society
You do not have to be a member to peruse the documents
at Missouri Historical Societies. The volunteer staff at each
society I've visited are always knowledgeable and willing
to assist with any query. I believe every Missouri county has
a Historical Society; chances are you can find the number on
the internet.

2. Local Library
Go to the reference section. Even the smallest county
libraries have genealogy and history related books, pamphlets,
maps, phone books, personal family histories and
newspapers. Copies are usually available for 10 cents
per page.

3. Local School
Here in Osage County, our local school is blessed with a
history teacher that is also a local historian! I bet Florida has
a local historian, also. Check the school library, too!

4. City Offices
Our one-room 'city hall' has a magnificent trove of historical
information, most of which is in the form of a locally-compiled
and locally-written book, complete with pictures. I bet the
oldest bank in the town probably has pictures, also. Ours
does, anyway.

5. Cyndi's Genealogy Links at http://www.cyndislist.com/ .
Cyndi has been compiling and offering, free of charge,
beautifully categorized genealogy information. I highly
recommend this site.

6. University of Missouri
Loads of information at their free library!

If all those suggestions fail, one option might be a brief membership at Ancestry.com. I have a membership, and will look this information up for you. Give me about an hour. (PS: Mark Twain's birthplace! And the 2000 census says Florida had a population of 9 ?! Wow ... and I thought our little village of >300 was small!)

A surveyor's map is called a plat map. they usually are of a complete county but divided into many pages. Unfortunately I don't know the county that Florida, MO is part of.

Do a GOOGLE search for:
plat map (name of county) Missouri 1850

It will give you the map you want.
