A mare has a similar cycle as a human woman does. Therefore, to totally and irrevocably keep her from coming into heat, she would have to be spayed ... the human equivalent to a hysterectomy.
All you can do when she comes in is keep her away from other horses and be very careful as she is 'being an idiot' because she has Horsey PMS.
If you think you WANT to try the Regumate thing read these:

Mares will come into heat in the spring and sometimes the fall.
I would lock her up in a paddock away from other horses during this time so she won't be bothered by the geldings who finally found their sexuality and try to mount your mare.
I had a friend who did the marble thing, ended up getting a mare in colic because of it and he refuses to go that route ever again.
My vet recommends penning the mare up for her heat cycle as there is no reason why you should spay the mare unless the mare has problems with her uterus. If she was diagnosed as having cancer of the uterus a removal operation would be warrented but when you don't want to breed her no more, just have her hang out with geldings then.

like some of the other answeres you've gotten Regumate and the marrbles are a good thing to do. You can also have implants done that they use on cattle that will keep her from cycling. All are going to be a bit on the expensive side, but if she is a show mare then the cost is worth it. Look into some natural supplements and they may or maynot help but worth a try. Keeping her penned up or stalled up is not going to make a difference, mares cycle monthly and according th the time of year, ie how long are the days for sun exposure. they go dormant in winter cuz of the shorter days, and mother nature helps out with not having foals in winter for survival purposes. hope this helps out.

There are several things you can do.You can use Regumate to stop her from cycliing. You have to be very careful when handling it and it is not for long term use.
They can insert marbels into the uterus of your mare. Her body will think it is preganant and she will not cycle.
I know a few people who have had this done and it works well but they need to have it done once per year or so.
Just one more reason I like my gelding so much.

None that I know of. I would talk to your vet about having her spayed. It's rather expensive, but I know of people who've had it done to their show mares they never intend to use for breeding.
Re the Regimate - this is a powerful drug. I'd be very cautious using it for this purpose.

They are now doing laproscopic hysterectomies on mares now.
So if you don't even plan on breeding her...that is a permanent solution.

A friend of mine fed his mare a marble and it made her think she was pregnant so she stopped coming into season.

You can try regumate, marbles, or you can do an ovarioectomy. You will not be able to breed her obviously if you choose the last option.
