Canada Post and the US Postal Service both advertise on TV about letter delivery. At least the USPS mentions parcel services (i.e. they have competition with courier companies). The Canada Post commercials really don't advertise anything, short of telling us they exist (oh, really.. ok thanks for letting me know!)....

They also advertise to let you know what new products and services they might have or that some people may not even know exist.

With post offices no longer having the monopoly, they now have competition with not only the internet/email, but with other postal services like Mail Boxes etc, Purolator and UPS.

Yes, so do Australia Post.
They have increased their services and now sell a whole range of goods (toys, stationery/cards, even printers, cell phones and the list goes on).
They too are a business and have to compete in the marketplace like all others.

To let people know they also deliver packages if your going to mail a letter then why not mail a package at the same time. Mailing letters does not pay the bills for the post office.
