Just to add to frime's answer... he is correct and the reason you need two modules to run in dual channel mode is because the RAM banks are electrically in parallel. That means that the physical resistance across them will be less if there are two modules instead of one (that means it will work faster... approximately doubling your transfer rate across them.) Also, the 1GB (1 gigabyte) means capacity. It doesn't mean that you must use (2) 512mb modules, you can use less (they must be the same for dual channel mode to work) but 1GB is what its maximum capacity is.

that means the notebook has 2 memory modules of 512MB each. they are of the type DDR2 (double data rate) and run at 533 MHz (2nd fastest type for notebooks at the moment). only DDR2 type memory is capable to run in dual channel mode, but only if there are 2 modules (one 1GB module alone isn't able to run in dual channel mode).

It means the speed of ur ram(random acess memory) , type of the ram n expandability of getting more ram.
