Conservatives used to carry these ideals:
Balancing the budget, small govt, limited govt, moral values...
But now this is the reality:
$8.5 trillion deficit, big business government, new controversial laws being passed all the time because of "national security", and misleading the American public about the war.
WHAT HAPPENED to the values conservatives used to stand by?

i absolutely am confused about this myself. i just listened to reagan's accepance speech at the 84 convention and got goose bumps thinking about the optimism of his revolution. where did it go???
edit:
i listened on a university accessed site; but you can read it anyway, and imagine the thunder of applause:

I ask the same thing. The Republican administration keeps threatening tax increases if the Democrats take over the White House. Yeah, right. Instead of this current war we're sinking in, what if the Republicans had said, "hey, let's not have a war, let's just raise your taxes by $8.5 trillion." $8.5 trillion dollars!!! Can you imagine the uproar? And you know, that would actually be preferable to the horrible carnage humans are visiting upon each other in the sand pits on the other side of the world.
And today I heard on the radio news report that Foley and some priest actually had an "intimate relationship." Apparently the priest came forward with the information. It's all too much. A pederast and a religious icon picking out curtains together. Excuse me while I toss my lunch.

The thing that is disturbing about Oakieboy (quaint name), not that Mr. Cut & Paste would have the brains to come up with such an agenda, is that it seems you can just name any attribute you want to stick on a group of people and a million other sheep start agreeing and bleating the same tune. For example, "Democrats just love terrorists" is so moronic on its face that it doesn't even deserve a reply, yet now you've got a million sheep going "Republicans good, Democrats baaaaad." Why? Because Democrats love terrorrists. Of course they do. Oakieboy just said so, didn't he?

I do think that pork barreling has gone nuts...that is why there is a need for line-item-veto.
As for the role of government, things did change on 9/11. Not much we can do about it if we want to stay safe.
The deficit is shrinking.
I still think the party cares about moral values more than the alternative party. At least the Republicans admit that there is a right and a wrong.....

This is really too big a question to answer.
There is a break down of values right across society, inevitably this seeps into local, then state governments. Right up the chain.
To a degree you've answered your own question.
Money gets in the way of conservative values.
And there appears to be no answer.

Bush happened. When he gained the majority of Reps in the house he became authoritarian and rejected the ideals of Reagan, a true conservative, I think Bush is one of those fiscal liberals and social conservatives. A rare species.

The Democratic Party is much more like the Republican Party of yesteryear. The Republican Party of today is nothing like the party it used to be.
I will always be amazed by any middle class American that supports the Republican Party. Why do that when they don't bother to support you???????

Why must the moron continue to waste valuable answering space?
You question makes us all wonder what happened. I think it's the inablility of the voters to rid the House, Senate, and Presidency or Republicans for any length of time in the past twenty years. A lot these neo-cons and far righty's have managed to stay within the ranks of our upper echelon of Government by just changing their job titles. We need to clean house!! VOTE DEMS IN NOV. !!!!!!!
