Hi! Stingrays are great!! Even Steve Irwin thought so..

There are about 200 different species of rays.. but they all fall into
2 General types of Rays..

the "benthic" (or bottom) stingrays and the "pelagic" (or swimming) stingrays.

It would have been a benthic type of ray that most likely Got Steve Irwin.
Benthic rays, such as the Atlantic stingray are often found buried in the sand. They usually have a rounded or "diamond-shaped" body and their stings, when present, are located near the middle or lower third of their "tail." As mostly bottom feeders, these rays generally feed on worms, clams, shrimp, crabs, snails and occasionally fish. Pelagic rays, like the spotted eagle ray and manta ray above, are more active swimmers that have a "bat-like" shape. Pelagic stingrays have stings that are located close to the body, just behind their pelvic fins. Like bottom rays, most pelagic rays also feed largely on bottom-dwelling organisms. However, the devil rays are mainly plankton feeders and use paddle-like cephalic or "head" lobes to direct plankton-rich water into their mouths.
Recently in teh news an Eagle ray jumped into a mans boat in Florida and barbed him in the chest.. he survived but was gravely injured as it had entered his heart.
Yes the buggers can jump out of the water.

Did you also know that not all Stingrays have barbs or can " sting" some are defensless.

To answer your question.. Manta rays are the largest of the rays

The giant black and white ray can have a wingspan of OVER 6 meters.. but heres the kicker this huge ray has no sting.. it has the tail but no ability to sting.
They are very docile, and amazing to watch , let alone swim with!

For the most part with a rare exceptions..even the rays who can sting WONT attack unless cornered or threatened.. they would rahter leave than fight.. it takes quite a while to replace a lost barb.

If you are ever stung immersing the sting or pouring super hot water on it will render the venom useless.... it cant tolerate the heat.

Hope this helps!
