I my friend didn't crank his car for a week . Today he did and some blue smoke came out of his tail pipes . He said it won't do it when the car is at normal temperature?

depending on what make and model car, blue smoke is motor oil and blue smoke on cold start-ups is a dead giveaway for bad valve stem seals, when the car sits for a long period of time the oil runs down the valve stem into the intake port and then gets pulled into the engine when it starts. the only way to fix this is to pull the valve springs off and replace the seals on the valve stems. this is a very intricate procedure and if not done correctly, you can drop a valve onto the piston top creating one gigantic "holy ****" problem. I would have a professional take a look at it.

I take it this is an older car.
Here is what is happoning.
when the car sits for a while, the valve guide seals allow oil to get past them and onto the walve face. When you start it the oil gets into the engine and thus blue smoke.
After the engine warms up no more smoke
This is common with older cars. Nothing to worry about untill it smokes all the time, engine warm or not

The rings are getting old. That's oil smoke. Things work better and loosen up when it's warm and the oil burns more completely.
