This is what I answered to another question similar to this. All this places are really a must in Mexico City:
I think Mexico City's safe meanwhile you visit the nice or tourist areas. I mean, it's like going to NYC and get into the Bronx or Harlem, or Watts in L.A. for sure I'll never do it.
Areas worth visiting:
Centro Histórico (downtown). Most of the ancient buildings of the whole continent are located here. Lots of thing to do if you like history and architecture. drink something at La Opera bar, it's bar from 18th century and it's very well conservated.
Polanco: The fashionista quarter. Here are located the designer stores and Mazaryk Ave. is kind of 5th Avenue. Visiting Antara Polanco Mall is a must.
Roma-Condesa: These are the french quarters of the city. You'll find gorgeous architecture and lots of restaurants and cafes where hip youngs go. This is kind of East Village (NYC) with a Mexican taste.
Coyoacan: And ancient spanish quarter. This place has a lot of culture and a bohemian atmosphere. Here is located the house-museum of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. There a wonderful handcraft market on sundays.
Reforma Avenue and Chapultepec Castle: Reforma Avenue is the beautiest avenues of the whole country and was once catalogated as one of the beautiest streets in the world. It was build by order of Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg (and austrian prince who governed Mexico for four years) as a copy of Champs Elysées avenue in Paris.
Chapultepec Castle was the house of the two empires that Mexico has and home of some presidents. This is the only formally castle in the continent.
Teotihuacan: This is an ancient city (700BC-200AC) cradle of Teotihuacan civilization. It has the highest pyramid in the western hemisphere and it's only 50 kms from the city.
Well... definitely there are lots of things to do and see in a 22 million people city.
The best hotel in town in my opinion would be The W and the JW Marriot.
Particularly I love The W hotel because of its architecture and atmosphere.

Not worthy visiting:
Some people says Xochimilco is a must. But I find it a bit of boring.

Museums: Archeology (in Chapultepec park), Franz Meyer (downtown), Modern Art (Chapultepec park).
Teotihuacan (piramds of the sun and moon) about forty minutes drive from downtown.
Basilica de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Shrine) On your way to Teotihuacan.
Xochimilco Floating Gardens (South east MexicoCity)
The Zocalo (Main square) area, including the cathedral, presidential palace. See Madero Street.
Beware of thieves, as you do in London or anywhere else. Do not flash cash around. Dress sensibly. Wear walking shoes. Do not drink the water (beer is great). Go easy on the tequila. Join a group, hire a guide.
Enjoy.

it rather is way less complicated to p.c.. out the places the place it rather is plenty tougher to enhance Spanish and get a flavor for close by way of existence. Mexico has developed some aspects purely for vacationer inns. you constantly go alongside with different human beings from the north. They contain Cancun, Cabo San Lucas. and Ixtapa. very almost everywhere exterior of the vacationer zones is outstanding. in case you attempt Puerto Vallarta, it rather is a huge place. The small cities around Bandaras Bay provide you a well-known view of Mexico, and Puerto Vallarta has each and every of this style of existence of a huge city. do exactly no longer stay in Nuevo Vallarta, or any of the vast inns on the city. detect a intense high quality small place and luxuriate in paradise.

The museum of antropology.
The zocalo ( nasty and dirty, but everybody goes there)
Xochimilco, "the mexican Venice" ( a touristic place, not worth it)
Zona Rosa, some bars, shops.
Polanco, for shopping on Mazaharik Ave.
Bellas Artes theatre.
Just be careful, lot of thieves.
And don't eat on the street, a big chance you'll get an infection or some weird virus.

Visit the Presidential Palace.
It's in the middle of a huge plaza, lots of vendors and stuff.
You can even take a tour of the Presidential Palace, it's kinda like their House of Representatives.
Also, there's this huge representation of what Mexico City looked like when it was founded hundreds of years ago, and there's an archeological dig, right there on the Plaza.
Was very very cool.

Take the turibus, its a bus that you buy a ticket and can use it for the whole day and in addition of giving you a sight tour of most places of interest for turists in Mexico City, it also stops in many spots of those places, so you can get out to visit whatever you wish to visit and later take the next turibus to take you to your next destination.
