AVG and Avast are the top free antivirus programs out there. AVG is not a resource hog like Norton (but I can't speak for Avast as I have never tried it) so I'd go with AVG.

Spysweeper is a good program, easy to use and free for 30 days, and light on the PC.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free is where you go for the best there is. I've been using for 6 years, and love it. It does daily updates and scans, as well as watching your computer and e-mail for ANYTHING suspicious. I even installed it on my mom's computer! (got your back, mom!)
My job also uses it on ALL of our computers (2500+)
Norton? well, you said it...
