The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China during the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.). In Chinese the wall is called "Wan-Li Qang-Qeng" which means 10,000-Li Long Wall (10,000 Li = about 5,000 km).

The nomadic people to the north of China were known as Mongols. Their raids into China caused a great deal of destruction. In 214BC, Shih Haung-ti connected a number of existing defensive walls into a single system fortified by watchtowers in order to keep out the Mongols in which later became known as the Great Wall of China.

The Great Wall was not the result of a single effort nor was it built in any particular year. For the most part, it was constructed between the 14th and 17th centuries by connecting various smaller defensive walls which had been built as much as 1500-2000 years before.

During the Ch'in dynasty. Around 250 BC, the first emperor of China combined the smaller states, and formed China. He later built the great wall, and also a great tomb for himself.
