We have cement steps leading to our front door. They are starting to crack and crumble so we are going to rip them out, but I need to know which is the best tool to do that with? Can you use just a standard sledge hammer or is there something out there that is better? Thanks.

you will need a sledge hammer to break up the rest of the step then youll need a quick cut with a carbon blade to cut through the rebar,it will be conected to your house behind the step then youll need a shovel cause most times the step will sit a bit lower than the ground. If you have ashfault in front of your step youll have to be carefull it doesnt give way,if that happens youll need the quick cut with a diamond blade to cut half a foot in front of your step ,you can cold patch it after.

Use a sledge hammer and a crow bar and or a mallet and a concrete chisel. Its basically a lot of hard work. You could go to a tool rental place and rent a jackhammer its actually only like 35-50 dollars and will save a lot of time and hard work.

It seems that the other answers assume you have pre-fab hollow concrete steps. If that is the case a sledgehammer works and is cheap and gives you a nice exercise. If you have poured in place solid concrete steps (which is fairly common on older construction) the only solution is to dig a nice deep hole in the yard and have the backhoe that dug the hold drag the old steps into the hole and bury it! It is by far the most common way of dealing with them, there isn't a jackhammer out there that can economically deal with big massive blocks of concrete.
