Alcohol metabolism is a fairly complex process. It varies a bit depending on how much alcohol is consumed as the liver is not able to handle high volumes of alcohol at one time.

It makes my head hurt the next day.
Must be all of the acetaldehyde that is a by-product of the alcohol dehydrogenase breaking down the alcohol that the body sees as a toxic substance.
