it says on the tag to wash it in warm water in a front load commercial washer. does that mean i have to go to a laundromat to wash it? because my washer is top loading. and it says to put clean tennis balls in the dryer with it. why? i've just never washed a down blanket before.

I have washed my down comforters in a top loader before and they were fine. The tennis balls or clean tennis shoes if tennis balls are not available are to fluff the down as it is drying. If it does not have something to beat it, it will end up have clumps of feathers all stuck together inside the comforter and they will not come apart. Hope this helped and good luck.

ok heres the deal. if it will fit easily in your washer the top load will work. fill the washer and then use your hands to basically handwash it. then manually run through the cycles to spin rinse and final spin. the only reason to use the front load is because it does not have the agitator. after washing you can dry in the dryer. it takes a long time because the cover is so tightly woven the air does not travel through it well. I usually hang it outside after a stint in the dryer( weather permitting)

In all honesty I don't understand how you "washed" a true "down" blanket. 100% down comforters are not machine washable, you can only spot clean them. About the only thing you can do is buy a duvet cover and put it over it. Next time you buy one make sure you are buying a more high quality "down" one. A lot of people become confused by thread count (270 is not a very high thread count for a down comforter). It is the quality of "down feathers" that makes them stay in the comforter. Then when you do buy a higher thread count there will be a much less chance of the feathers leaking out. I have a very high quality down comforter that is 1200 Count and it was well worth the money. I have had it now for two winters and adore it. I recently purchased one for one of my spare bedrooms and retired the one from that bedroom to another spare bedroom. These last "forever". down filled blankets or duvets need an extra large washer and dryer so the down does not become compact. you want it filled evenly. tennis balls in the dryer makes the blanket's filling even out again and fluffs up the feathers.
