Actually I saw a documentary on the True Hollywood Story and they said that it actually was NOT a true story but an adaptation from the crimes of the serial killer Ed Gein.

Contrary to widespread notion, this movie isn't a real tale. It was once filmed from 15 July 1973 - 14 August 1973, at the same time the starting narrative claims that the truly parties took location on 18 August 1973, so it might be unimaginable for the movie to be established on precise parties which had no longer occurred on the time of filming. Some city legends say that the the "truly" Texas Chainsaw Massacre took location close Poth, (a small the city approximately 50 miles south of San Antonio. This is fake. The movie is fictional and established loosely at the lifetime of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein (as is the traditional Psycho (1960)).

Was there actually a crazed family hacking people with chainsaws? No. When they say "actual events" they're trying to scare you a bit more. This article explains a lot of the trivia behind the movie. The creator got the idea for the movie while in a hardware store (hence: chainsaws).

It was inspired in part by the serial killer Ed Gein. He has been in inspiration behind countless horror flicks.

No, but it was inspired by true events. Back in the 1950's a man named Ed Gein (i might have misspelled his last name) chopped up people and used their bones and skin to make furniture (and skulls to make soup bowls). He is the man who inspired "Hannibal Lecter", "Norman Bates" and "Thomas Hewitt aka Leatherface". Rent the movie "Ed Gein (again check the spelling of the last name" or google him and you'll get more info. Dont worry, if you're driving through texas your not gonna get cut up by a chainsaw. Ed lived in Wisconsin...
