It was pretty similar.

1. The conquerers were high class, as they had much power and weapons, plus they knew how to write. Indians were pretty much opressed and their pre-hispanic social system crushed.
2. The Criollos, descendents of Europeans born in America, were Lower High Class.

3. The Mestizos were a mix of Spaniards and Indians. They were next in the scale, similar to a middle class.

4. The Indian Royalty that adapted to the conquest were middle class as well.

5. Other mixes of Spaniards with Africans and Mestizos were free but poor.

6. The other indians remained poor but free for a while until the feudal system.

7. Blacks and Indian war hostages (from different tribes) were slaves.

As it evolved it became more similar to the US system, until the colonies developed to different countries and gained their independences.

Drea is right. Haitians are seen black to quite some DR's and that they hate Haitians, so as that they do no longer evaluate themselves black. additionally they see themselves as Latino till now the rest via fact its this variety of diverse custom. yet I agree w/ Qwerty too. Pero me gusta l. a. gente de l. a. Dominica Republica... mas o menos... :) EDIT: I do agree, i think of quite some them do have self hatred and its demanding, yet its additionally cultural. they only have a stupid custom that places non black above black, like quite some yank places via slavery and the background. *sigh*
