Build up your physical and sense of anticipation.
You need to be able to decide what to do before the ball reaches you.

I'm not sure I know what half back is, but I'll try to help you anyway. Also I suppose it depends on where in the midfield, but I'll give you 4 options. If you're a holding mid, try to develop stamina by running long distances, on the tread mill, up stairs, etc. Chances are your coaches are going to ask you to run the midfield (make tackles, collect the ball from the back, etc.) You're going to have to do that the entire match, and it gets tiresome. If you are a winger (left or right of the midfield) work on passing with both feet and also with the insides and outsides of your feet. Defending isn't too much a priority, but don't ignore your part. If you play Center-mid, work on shooting, long passing, free kicks, stamina, switching the ball to your other foot, and anticipation. If you can make plays happen before your opponent can stop you, you've played your position well. Good luck.

First off you need to run a lot because midfielders have the job of trying to score a point and sprinting back to help the defenders. A good exercise would be to run laps around a Field, and while your running on the long side of the Field jog then when your running on the short side sprint until your running on the long side again. also practice passing with both feet. Just because your a left midfielder doesn't mean you won't ever use your right foot to pass or kick. And be aggressive! Get a little mean. And don't forget to have fun!!! Hope I was of help.

it depend on the budy building of the player because his job is to stop any attack from the other team and he must be smart enough to be able to use his mind before using his body
