no its not illegal in fact even if you send your child to school you still have the legal responsibility to ensure that their education is appropiate for their age and ability not the school. as far as the social aspect how many other times are we subjected to 30 other people all the same age and one person in charge telling us when we can or cant go to the toilet? I am not selfish since I am prepared to look after my children all the time and don't shirk my responsibilities towards them by using school as a babysitting service.

Sundea I am just trying to get people thinking I agree that schools are important for some families but a lot of people don't even realise that there are other options.

Not a great idea unless you dedicate yourself.

Good for you. I have often thought about this for my son and do feel that if he is unable to get into one of the few decent secondary schools in our area (all selective entry), than I will seriously consider it.

I appreciate the concerns regarding social interaction, however I am unsure that it would really be an issue. I am aware of all the home school support there is available, and do wonder why it is not publicised more. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that parents are give plenty of support with regards to following the curriculum, and there are outings and get togethers with local groups which provide more support.

I admire your decision to follow this route and wish you and your son all the best.

Good idea in theory, but what happens if you have to work? also you have to prove that you are educating your child/children and not letting them sit watching tv all day. I think unless there is a bloody good reason to take the child out of school it is better to leave them in. Children need to interact with other children and they cant always do that at home.

Nobody has to send their children to school, it's called home schooling. Unfortunately, you don't have to be qualified to home school your children, and you don't have to prove anything to anyone that you are actually teaching them or that they are learning. But you can still do it.

It's a horrible idea. Who wants to be with their kids 24/7. One person is certainly not qualified to teach every academic subject from k-12. Your children will never learn the social skills necessary to be successful and capable in the adult world. Your children will miss out on enrichment activities like phys ed, art, music, etc. I cannot think of one, not even one, good reason to home school your children. But it is not illegal to do so!

i think you need to look at the bigger picture - school is not just about education. we are taught about interpersonal skills. ok some of our own experiences may have sucked, but it is all about character building. in life we have to do things that we might not want to just to get ahead and if we do not learn that then we will just fold at the first sign of distress.

home teaching is on the increase, however, your l.a. usually has someone there who can guide you / monitor your child's education as it is an offence for them not to be adequately taught...however, unless you are fully aware of how to teach the curriculum subjects that your children's peers will be learning, i really think you will be placing them at an unfair disadvantage when they finally face the big wide world...

hmmm this is an odd one.. i would have liked not to go to school but when i look back i did actually enjoy it. I had friends, social experiences, learned communication skills, mixed with both sexes, learned about team working and general life skills to get through work.

However I would love to have taken my children out of school, i think unless they were seriously traumatised then they are better off there.

If your kid don't go to school it will probably end up like all the other scroungers in this country, unfortunately all the rest of us have to work hard to keep morons who sponge of the state! I think its a good idea to go to school, makes you interact with other kids and gives you some degree of education so you can at least read and write. Plus it gives the parents time to themselves. Not unless they take time off work to look after the thing and sponge more!

I totally agree with you, the state tries to take away your child's natural gift and turn all children into the same that no natural ability or gift will stand out....in case it upsets a child with lesser abilities...good on you !

it is perfectly feasible
but you have to be prepared to cover the whole curriculum and there are advantages to studying in a group
get advice from Education Otherwise
they have years of experience
remember you still need to satisfy the local authority AND the dreaded OFSTED inspector

I know this and have always inteded (circumstances permitting) to educate my children at home. If they choose to go to a school instead I will let them. Although first will need to have some kids.

I didn't know that...

anyways I think a parent decides to do send their child to school is because it teaches them to be more social and thus be more independent in the open world.
