I have built a gorgeous deck and cannot get a straight answer on sealing. I have used heartwood redwood and do not wish to lose the beauty of the wood. I have been told to use a tinted sealant and that seems ludicrous when I wish to retain the beauty o fthe wood. Second problem is prep work before sealing. I am open to suggestions.

Just buy a 5 gallon can of THOMPSONS WATER SEAL !

Then get yourself a squeeze mop that you squeeze the water, or in this case the sealant out of.....Once you squeeze most of the sealant out of the sponge, then just start "mopping " your deck..........Naturally start in the area that is farthest away from you......Take your time applying this...You don't want a sponge mop dripping, and you don't want it fairly dry either...You will notice what you need as you begin to apply it.........We use this method on our deck all the time((((((additional advice)))) If you have railing up, You will be able to do this once you are done with the floor as long as you are able to go on the outside of the deck to reach all around the railing............You will not be sorry for using this product.............good luck.........(make sure it won't rain for at least 3 days) And once it rains later, you will notice how it beads up on the wood.

penofin or penefin. It is a high grade brazlian oil that penetrates deeply.

Many inexpensive products on the market do not penetrate well or have wax additives to give great initial beading but not much real protection.

Avoid products that build up a top layer of protection. They require you treat all six sides of the wood and on a built deck that isn;t feasible - not to mention the peeling from these coatings (clear or pigmented) looks horrible.

The top grade materials will run 40-50 bux a gallon but your redwood is worth it.

A clear sealant is available. Lowes or Home Depot.

If the decking needs cleaned, use a pressure washer, but be careful, not a strong narrow stream, only spray. Allow to dry and apply sealant.

First make sure the deck is clean and free of depris. Then use Thompson's water seal to protect it against the elements. It will not alter the color of the wood and will protect your wood and keep it beautiful for years to come.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Home Depot has great suggestions for deck sealing. It's just a matter of you going to one nearest to you and asking an associate to help you in deciding which product is best.
