Every single hat I crochet for myself is too big! When I crochet for others, they fit just fine. My gague is always correct, but I always end up with a hat I can't wear. What am I doing wrong?

Measure it on the small side in the future. You can always stretch it out a little. Perhaps you can get someone to help measure you. It's hard to get an exact measure of one's self. Give the hats you already have to local charities. There is a big collection in the winter for St. Jude's and other cancer based hospitals...then, have someone measure you..and crochet away to a hat that fits!

Unlike knitting, where you can create a rib, crochet doesn't epand as much. The only way to simulate this is to make a fold up edge that has exactly the same number of stitches throughout. What you need to do is create a chain of approximately the circumference you're looking for. This should be a comfortable, not tight, fit around the head. Then just count the stitches. When you come to the fold up part, use this number of stitches throughout and you should have what you want.

Perhaps for your self, change the size of the hook around the
head area??

Would that work for you?

You may just have a smaller frame and head size?

good luck
