Although I use it a great deal, yes, it is the stupidest internet acronym, right next to ROFL and LMAO.
The gaming sub-culture types it out as "lawl" or "lawls" to be witty.

FTW = For the win
FTL = For the lose
omgwtfbbq = oh my god, wtf (i'm sure you know what wtf is) bbq is... well barbeque
lmfaoroflmao = uhh yeah..
ugh, so many more, i really dont' want to list them.. but in my opinion, lol is far more cleaver then the rest.
